Why is everyone so curious about the Pope's shoes all the sudden?

Ever since the Pope fell ill, I've been getting a lot of hits from people searching for the Pope's shoes and finding a link I posted to this picture of the Pope where you can see his shoes from October 2003.

I know it's gauche to talk about one's site stats, but I'm really curious: why are so many people looking for the Pope's shoes? Did his death suddenly make everyone think "I've always wondered what kind of shoes the Pope wears"? Or is there some better reason?

Maybe people are just hunting for "Shoes of the Fisherman"--the book and novel in which a man from the Russian bloc becomes pope in the 1960's--but can't remember the exact title.

They have the Pope looking like Santa/Satan and have his shoes showing in public, a symbol of his/Catholic church's humiliation and subservience to the New World Order: "he was the first Pope whose shoes we could see", Italian press, ie., he was controlled from the beginning.

I saw a magazine picture of the Pope's shoes. Looks like they originally had leather soles, but it looks like he had them re-soled with half-soles of rubber. (The most inexpensive repair job). It goes to show you that he personally did not own much in the real world. (I don't like half soles, since they tend to come loose over time)
