Why is plastic cheap?

Plastic is made from oil, which is a non-renewable resource.

So why is it cheaper than stuff made from renewable resources?

Maybe so you will buy it, then it falls apart and you have to buy another.

Maybe because of very cheap labour.

Do plastic things actually fall apart more than things made from renewable material?

I guess it depends on the quality of the plastic. But mostly I think they do.

Or else it's just that things are made so poorly and cheaply now that everything falls apart so quickly, and I associate that with plastic. I'm old enough to remember when many things that are now made of plastic were made of metal (non-renewable) and wood, and lasted a very long time.

So I don't know. But it's a good question.

Hmmm, most of my cheap things don't fall apart quickly. (Except my $2 necklaces and $1 ebay earbuds, but that's what I get for buying jewellery and electronics in coin denominations.) But then I'm clumsy, so maybe I just break stuff before it falls apart.
