Can people with prosthetic hands use microwaves?

Long story how I stumbled upon this, but it turns out the touchpad on my microwave only works if you press the buttons with actual flesh and blood. Pressure alone won't make them work, they need the warmth (I assume it's the warmth) too.

Every microwave I've ever met had a touchpad, I assume they all work the same.

So what about people with prosthetic hands? Are they forever locked out of microwaves?

hmm... interesting question. My microwave isn't that sensitive, it will take any pressure you care to give it. My touchpad on my mac though... Could it also be the texture? It might be looking for the friction that you get from fingers and wouldn't get from a smoother object. For example, I had a band-aid on my index finger last night, and I had to use my middle finger on my computer's touchpad. The band-aided finger just slid ineffectively.

It is an interesting question. I don't know anyone with prosthetic hands. Lots of non-functioning hands, like quads (and occasionally my own!) but no prosthetics.

Bonus off-topic OMG puppy.

Further experimentation shows that hands in rubber gloves work and fingernails work (real but painted - I don't have any fake nails at the moment and I'm not going to buy them just for this experiment), but hands in oven mitts don't. Neither do cutlery, pencils, or baby carrots. I wanted to test hands in winter gloves but I have no idea where I put my winter gloves. Better figure that out.

And that puppy is a perfect ying-yang! It must have religious significance somewhere in the world.

Hands in oven mitts don't work? Crazy.

Plus he looks like my Buster must have when he was a baby.

That's how it started. I was wearing oven mitts and the touchpad wouldn't work. I took them off and it worked again. Experimentation ensued.
