Perception of safety

Yesterday there was a shooting on the subway and there was a shooting on the 401.

I've seen news items about people who are now afraid to go on the subway and news items reassuring people that they shouldn't be afraid to go on the subway. I haven't seen any news items about people who are afraid to go on the 401 or reassuring people that they shouldn't be afraid to go on the 401.

That's interesting. It ties into fear of urban life and fear of urban public transit, I think.

Disproportionate, usually unfounded fear.

People from wide-open countries like Canada and the US really don't like enclosed spaces unless under their (sometimes imaginary) control

That seems like an unfounded generalization. Very few Canadians or USians live in wide open places.
