Post your printer recommendations here

I want a new printer. Mine is seven years old, loud, big, awkward, and runs out of ink at the slightest provocation. I want a quiet, unassuming printer that is efficient enough that I can print whenever the fancy strikes me, without worrying about whether the print job is worth using up the ink.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I can't really recommend what to get, but I can recommend what NOT to get. We have a Lexmark X1150 --one of those all-in-one scanner/copier/printer combo units. I'm not wild about any of it's capabilities. It's slow and clumsy, uses a lot of ink and doesn't print photos well--something I really miss from my old HP. In fact, if I were going to make a recommendation, I'd say look seriously at HP printers.

I bought the same printer as the one I had at work.

When my printer at home runs out of toner, I swap it for the working one at work and get a replacement cartridge from work.

Epson inkjets. Inexpensive, works well, quiet. I've had several. The one I have now is a combination scanner/copier/printer - cost under $100 Canadian.

Mine's an HP1320, because my 2 wants from a printer were that it would do double-sided and have a decent-sized enclosed paper tray. It wasn't ultracheap, but it also wasn't as expensive as I feared (rebates!). No more manual double-siding in 50 pp batches!
