Teach me people skills

Suppose someone is talking to me, and I can't think of anything to say in response. It's a point in the conversation where a substantive response (i.e. more than "Okay") is expected, but I've got nothing.

What should I say?

I already have in my repertoire admitting that I can't think of what I'm supposed to say at that particular point, but that doesn't always work. Any other ideas?

I try to ask a question, to deflect the conversation back to the speaker.

I get that. I've always thought of it as an Asperger's thing, not that I've ever had a legit diagnosis. Have you considered it?

Other than that, no useful suggestions, sorry. It's just annoying.

Never sought a diagnosis, but could probably get one. No real point though.

I sometimes use "I hear you" . . .

Ooh, I could get good use out of that one! Thanks!
