Teach me about driving

In driving, apparently you're not supposed to pass on the right. So if you're in the right-hand lane and the lane to your left is moving slower, what are you supposed to do?

(I honestly don't know. As I've mentioned before, I'm a bad driver, so I never got comfortable enough driving faster than other cars for this to ever be an issue.)

You're supposed to be patient, drive along in the right, until there's lots of space on your lefrt and you can easily move over without cutting anyone off. But tons of people pass on the right. It's one of my biggest driving peeves. Idiots pass on the right and cut you off to move one car length ahead. Grrrr.

What about if you're not trying to cut in front of the person to the left, you're just trying to drive along in the right lane like a good girl? Do you have to go slower than the cars on your left on purpose? (If so, are you able to articulate why that's helpful?)

Oh no, you don't have to purposely drive slower than a slow poke to your left. Passing in this sense does not mean simply driving past the other car and proceeding further on the road in your lane. Passing means trying to get directly ahead of the other car in their lane. That's passing in the driverly sense.

There is nothing illegal about passing (overtaking) on the right on a multi-lane road. You cannot pass on the right on a two lane road (i.e.: one lane in each direction), or go around a vehicle stopped to make a left turn if your wheels will leave the pavement. What you're talking about with lanes moving at different speeds isn't considered passing.

I can't believe that in 30 years on the planet, including 20 years in a car-centric community, no one either told me what passing means in this context or used the term in a way that made it possible for me to glean the exact meaning? You'd think they'd at least have brought it up in driving school!

Which actually reminds me of something else I wanted to blog.

That is bad! What crappy driving instructions you got.

Re anon's comment, I wasn't implying that passing on the right is illegal. Merely that cars zooming up on my right and cutting me off, then hitting their brakes - because they're trying to get one car-length ahead - is stupid and dangerous and I find it maddening. However, it is not illegal.
