Wherein Dear Ellie misses the obvious answer

In re: the first letter, where the lady's husband insists on switching sides of the bed when his neck hurts:

Why not just switch sides permanently?

The lady indicates she has a preferred side of the bed (as do most other married friends she's asked). I think being comfortable is a big key to good sleep, so switching permanently might be problematic.

I think the advice is on the mark. I doubt very much that switching to the other side of the same bed is helping his neck. The pain could be a sign of a serious condition. At least, pain is often an indication your body is trying to tell you something. Having it checked by a doctor makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe he just needs that special pillow and then they can both be comfortable and happy.

I'm thinking if it does help his neck, then switching is obviously the decent thing to do. But if it doesn't actually help his neck, it's a good way to call his bluff.

Or, now that I think about it, they could just switch pillows?
