Question for people outside of Canada

Does the URL in your address bar appear as impstrump.blogspot.com or impstrump.blogspot.ca? Lately, blogspot.com seems to be redirecting to blogspot.ca, and I'm not sure if it's because my blog's location settings are set for Canada or because my ISP is located in Canada (in other words, because I'm writing from Canada or because I'm reading from Canada.)

Google has brought in localized domains. Your blog and any Blogspot blog you read in Canada will have the .ca suffix.

They have done this to aid in web censorship. If all regions and contries are localized it will be easier for them to black out sites at the request of governements.

So get angry and complain!

The answer to your question is writing from, not reading from.

So now we have two opposite opinions. Anyone have a tiebreaking vote? Or a primary source?

After I clicked through from google.com/reader I got impstrump.blogspot.se, and I'm in Sweden.

Ah-ha!

I actually wasn't disagreeing with the first commenter. I know that's why it's happening, but I thought it was based on the writer, not the reader. But now I realize that from Google's POV, this makes more sense.

Thank you Karin from Sweden!

This made me realize that, weirdly, all the blogspot blogs I read are written in Canada.

I have wget going through TOR, which apparently assigned me as a canadian for this session:

Pardon the messy formatting. Google/Blogger allows neither <PRE nor <CODE in comments...

Another gripe with Blogger...what ever happened to email comment subscriptions? Guess I'll have to 'mark as unread' in my reader to know whether there are any further comments on this post, or subscribe to the comment feed, both of which are a PITA relative to the way I work the blogosphere.

impudent strumpet said...

Sorry, I don't think I can change that. At least I can't find a pertinent setting in my blogger dashboard. Anyone?

The email comment subscriptions are a big issue for many people. Allan and I both have a friend and loyal reader who really misses this.

If you change comment settings from "full page" to "embedded", you can still have email comment subscriptions. For me, there are other issues with that setting that I don't like, but YMMV.

Complaining to Blogger is often like speaking to a black hole in space, but it's always worth a try. You can use the "leave feedback" feature on the dashboard - they say they read every item. You can also complain through the Google/Blogger help forums, FWIW.

Hmmmm...I switched it to embedded briefly when I was looking for the comment subscription setting, but I didn't see anything. I'll have to look more carefully when I have time.

However, I am reluctant to switch to embedded, because I find that when I comment on other blogs with embedded comments, my comments disappear into the ether half the time.
