"Hi, this is Teresa MacDonald calling from the Business Funding Centre..."

I just got a voicemail spam starting with "Hi, this is Teresa MacDonald calling from the Business Funding Centre" and trying to sell me information about federal and Ontario (yes, they actually said "Ontario") business grant programs. They left a 613 (Ottawa) number to call them back at.

Problem: according to my call display, this call originated in the 641 area code, which is Iowa.

They might be using VoIP. Then the area code is not linked to any geographic location.

Would VoIP give them a random phone number like that? Or would they have to have something to do with Iowa to get an Iowa phone number?

With VoIP you can get any available phone number for anywhere in the world. If you did a lot of business in Japan, you could get a Tokyo phone number so it would appear that you were calling from Japan.

It wouldn't be random, but it could be just an available number that they picked up.

Weird decision. It does nothing for their credibility. I wonder why at the very least it isn't the number they say to call back to?
